Recession Proof Your Website and Your Business

So much talk lately on the news about a coming recession. One speaker even said that he believed the more the media talked about it, the more likely it would happen!

But he also emphasized that in reality, some sectors of the economy are already in a recession, auto makers and the realty market to name two.

So, how can you recession proof your business and your website? Here are 6 tips:

1) Lower Your Debt

Any debt that you have , now is the time to work as hard as possible on bringing it down. The less money you have going out on a regular basis, the easier it will be to survive through a recession.

2) Reach Out To A Larger Audience

If you are currently only selling your product or service to a local area, think about how you could sell it to a national or international area. If you are only marketing to a certain segment of the population, how can you market to other segments? This may mean changing your product line or adding products, it may mean using your services in different ways.

3) Be Unconventional

Really think outside the box. If you’re a divorce attorney working in Ohio you probably can’t handle divorce cases in Alabama. But, you can write and sell “divorce kits” to anyone looking to make their divorce as easy as possible. You can even provide lists of local divorce attorneys in each kit. If you sell shaving cream products for men, think about how you can re-package the product for teen boys who are just beginning to shave. The more people and the more uses your product or service can provide, the larger your sales will be.

4) Can you incorporate a side business?

If you sell greeting cards online, can you also add personalized stationary, gifts, baby announcements, etc? These new products don’t have to be showcased in your store or your website, they can have their own website (actually, it’s better if they do – creates more of a niche). Think! Clients that purchase your product or service, what else would they be searching for? Here are some ideas…

a) Anyone buying a house may also need a local handyman.
b) Anyone looking for local entertainment may also need party favors.
c) Anyone looking for legal services may also need credit repair services.
d) Anyone looking for psychiatric care may also need a professional organizer or maid service.
e) Anyone looking for mortgage loans may also need a local realtor.

You get the idea – think about what your clients might need and see if you can give it to them.

5) Identify and Market Your USP (Unique Selling Point)

What makes you so special? What makes your product or service better than someone else’s? Write it down, and market it!!! Put it on your business cards, your car magnets, your phone messages, your website, flyers, brochures and everywhere else!

6) Adopt Cost Cutting Techniques

Is there any way that you can do what you do quicker or more streamlined? Is there software that can make it easier for you? Are there tools that you can purchase that will cut your time and/or your workers’ time? A little investment in this area will help you in the long run.

These techniques can help you survive a recession, if an when it comes. From what I hear and read on the news stations and newspapers is that it’s not a matter of IF a recession will occur, it’s more a matter of WHEN. So, be prepared.

Non-profits And Adsense

I have several friends who do volunteer work at several charities. And I’ve spoken with all of these friends about adding Adsense to the websites of their charities. Now, mind you, these are small charities. Local pet shelters, etc.

But yet, these small, local charities have not taken me up on adding Adsense to their website.

Why not? I mean, it’s free and it can bring in extra revenue.

If these charities are worried that Adsense would take people away from the website and bring them to other websites, then create a separate website with information about their topic. This information website can also link visitors back to their main site but more important, it could earn revenue for them.

With so many charities continuously looking for ways to earn money, I think Adsense is just a no brainer!

If It’s Good Enough For The Big Boys…

One question I get quite often is “Should I buy several domain names?”

My answer is usually “Yes” and I’ll give you two reasons why.

1) You should buy your domain name with different extensions. In other words, if your domain is www.roberts.com then you’ll want to also buy www.roberts.net, www.roberts.biz, etc. The point is to keep someone else from buying them.

2) It’s better to have multiple, niche websites than to put all your information into one website. Why? Because the niche websites can provide more information and be structured more “themed” than one website with everything.

3) The large companies all do this. They have separate websites each one marketing a specific service or two that they provide. Think about it. If you publish one book and put 100 copies of 1 book in a bookstore, you’ll get some sales (hopefully). But if you publish 5 books and put 100 copies of each of those 5 books in a bookstore, you’ll get more sales.

So, for the extremely low price that domain names go for, my recommendation is always

The REAL Secret To Internet Marketing

Whenever I meet anyone for the first time and I tell them that I do Internet Marketing, inevitably one of the very first questions I get is “What’s the real secret to internet marketing?“. It doesn’t matter if I’m speaking at a group or if I’m meeting someone at a social event. They always get to that question.

What’s my answer? My answer is that there really is no secret, it’s just hard work. But if there were a trick that I could (and do) recommend to everyone, it would be ARTICLES!!!!

You don’t believe me? Why not conduct an experiment and test it for yourself. Write one article a month for 6 months. Submit that article to online press release programs, online article submission sites, your blog and if appropriate on your website. Make sure the article is optimized for the keyword phrase you are marketing. After 6 months, check your website logs. If your articles are optimized correctly, you’ll see people coming in to your website via those articles. You’ll also see people coming to your website via those keyword phrases.

How do I know it works? Because I do it for my own websites. I admit that it does take time. It takes at least 3 months for the articles to begin showing up on the top 50 and about 6 months for them to begin bringing in traffic. But, I also admit that I don’t pay for press releases or article submission sites. I use all the free versions.

There’s a good book called “Turn Words Into Traffic” by Jim and Dallas Edwards. The subtitle of the book is “Finally! The Secret To Non-Stop Free Targeted Traffic”. What’s the “Secret”? Writing articles!

Well, go ahead, give it a try. You’ve got nothing to lose but a little bit of time.

Getting Your Money’s Worth With SEO

Getting Your Money’s Worth With SEO

I got an email yesterday from a website designer I know. He listens to lots of podcasts and he participated in one by asking a question, “What types of SEO reports should one expect from a monthly SEO marketing campaign?” (I paraphrased here). The question was to Webmaster Radio and the response was 30 minutes long!

They began the answer with the “you get what you pay for” concept. One of the hosts said that his SEO firm cost him $3400.00 per month and he really didn’t get much for that. He was very vague, just said that the reports he did get gave him suggestions of what needed to be done but they were up to him to do them. His implication was that he paid $3400.00 a month and didn’t get much so that means he needs to pay more.

The second host didn’t understand why anyone would need a monthly marketing campaign at all!

I found the podcast a bit ridiculous. Here were two supposed experts in their field and they acted and sounded like novices. Let me explain why I say that…

1) $3400.00 per month and not even a report on conversion rates? I say if a company can get someone to pay that much money then more power to them.

2) Just because this $3400.00/month company didn’t issue out good reports or didn’t provide the proper SEO tactics that needed to be done on the website does not mean that paying more will get you that. Instead, a smart consumer would check out what other SEO firms are doing and for what amount.

3) Why would a good SEO campaign need to be maintained monthly? Well, there is always testing to be done. Testing of landing pages, keyword phrases, call to action, etc. Search engines also love new and fresh content so that information needs to be added and optimized regularly. Also, there are holidays, events, seasonal products, services, etc. that should be added to the website. Websites are not brochures. They’re meant to be interactive.

Also, I am consistently amazed at the concept that is continuously put out there “you get what you pay for” when it comes to SEO. The truth is, the great majority of SEO firms cater to mid and large size companies. You know, the ones that can easily pay $3000.00 per month and more. But for small and home based business websites, these fees are ridiculous. I provide affordable SEO services and just because they’re affordable doesn’t mean they are not of high quality. My clients are in the top 10 for their keyword phrases and continue to grow each and every month. There are SEO firms out there that cater to small and home based businesses and don’t let anyone tell you (even the “experts”) that it can’t be done!
