For years, many years, I’ve been essentially arguing with clients about blogging! Mostly trying to get through their fears of blogging. It seems that most people have this concept that when you write a post in a blog it has to be absolutely perfect. Grammatically correct in every way, it has to get the A+ grade from their old high school English teacher.

That’s just not true. No where near true!

Blogging is about talking and the truth is, every business owner can talk about their business. (Usually to the point where everyone else is rolling their eyes – but you know what I mean!). Our businesses are our “babies” – our “life projects” and we’re proud of the work we do in them. And proud of any successes as well! As we should be!

Anyway, back to blogging. I was sent an article published on CNN Money’s Fortune blog which hits the nail on the head about this blogging/talking concept. Only they gave it a very fancy name. They call it “Corporate Transmedia Storytelling”.

The title of the article is “Why Storytelling Is Essential For Business Leaders“. As someone who sees dozens and dozens of website statistics every week I’m here to tell you that blogging does work. It’s not a magic solution, it’s not quick like PPC, but it’s steady, it’s long reaching and it will bring you to target audiences you didn’t even know existed.

So, grab a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and sit down and read this article. You’ll love it and hopefully, I’ll have to do less arguing in the future!

Yesterday, my business coach pointed out that I very much write like I talk. He told me “…that’s a good thing.” (I wasn’t sure!). But he then followed it up by commenting on my “tone” when I write. (So, I’m assuming it’s when I talk as well).

Anyway, he mentioned that I “challenge my readers” – in not a very nice way. Hmmm – at first I didn’t really understand but after he pointed out some examples to me I got the idea. I guess that’s the Sicilian in me coming out – I’ll have to watch that. So, if I sound a bit “rough” in my blogs, I apologize, it’s truly not intended. But feel free to let me know when you notice it in my writings.

I know I try to get my clients to write as much as possible and many of them tell me it’s not easy but I remind them that if they can talk, they can write. Blogs are so perfect for that. Just say what’s on your mind and say it as if you were talking to someone over lunch. Sure, everyone could have “better” writing, but, we could also all be better drivers. That doesn’t seem to be stopping us from driving!

Here’s a blogging tip for beginners and seasons bloggers.

How many of you out there read blogs on a regular basis?

If you don’t and if you’re trying to work on writing in your blog…I have a suggestion…

Go to Google and type in…
“your favorite thing” + “blog”

Yep, type in your favorite thing, whatever it is, “football”, “champagne”, “fashion”, whatever, just type it in quotes. Follow that with the plus sign and then follow that with the word “blog” in quotes.

What you’re telling Google here is to search for “your favorite thing” and a “blog”. What you’ll get in return is a list of the blogs related to your favorite thing.

Here are some samples…

“name tags” + “blog” – a top result is from www.officenmore.com
“personal injury” + “blog” – a top result from www.newyorkpersonalinjuryattorneyblog.com
“mens rights” + “blog” – a top result from www.mensrightsboard.com

What I want you to see is what people write in blogs. I read about 10 blogs a week. I mean, I read them daily, but there are 10 different ones that I read.

Anyway, I see some bloggers writing 2 sentences, I see others writing entire articles and mostly I see a mix of these two extremes. What almost all bloggers do though is write often. If they don’t write daily, they write at least every other day or every few days. It’s almost always less than 7 days, that’s for sure!

They write about an article they just read, about a commercial they just saw, about an experience they just had and how all of these affect or are related to their blog topic.

So, when you sit down to write your blog, don’t look at it as a chore. It’s not meant to be a chore. A blog is meant to showcase your knowledge base. It should be easy, fun and exciting to be teaching and talking to the world!

So, go ahead, go to Google and type in “your favorite thing” +”blog” and read. Subscribe to some of them, who knows, you may just like it! I hope this easy blogging tip works well for you.
